A Few Points on LaVeyan Satanism: Introduction for the Outsider
Greetings, all you demons named and nameless. In case you're unacquainted with Satanism, allow me to separate some fact from fiction.
LaVeyan Satanism is not "Theistic Satanism"
LaVeyan Satanism = No God & No Devil (except within ourselves), No Heaven & No Hell (except here on Earth). LaVey used Satan as the manifestation of mankind's natural desires that have been intentionally suppressed by organized religion. What has been deemed sinful, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone who does not deserve or wish to be hurt, is embraced in Satanism. The so-called "Seven Deadly Sins" are prime examples. Satanists see nothing wrong with indulging in these "sins," provided the indulgence doesn't turn to compulsion / addiction. Whether your existence is like Heaven or Hell is up to you, and whether you be more God or Devil is left to your own choice & judgment.
No Child and/or Animal Sacrifice
This should be obvious, but due to media sensation Satanism has been associated with acts of indiscriminate cruelty. Nothing could be further from the truth. Children & animals are viewed with great respect in Satanism, children being "natural magicians," who have a largely uncorrupted sense of the world and see issues with greater clarity than adults. Pet animals are encouraged, as their dependence & unwavering devotion gives them powers as "familiars," givers of protective energy to their people. Anton LaVey preferred the company of animals to humans, owning everything from a tarantula to a Nubian lion.
Suicide is Strongly Discouraged
Another item that should be obvious, but by now we've all heard about subliminal Satanic messages telling teenagers to kill themselves. In reality, though, let's not forget who actually comprises the religion of the death-obsessed. To a Satanist, fleshly life here and now is of the greatest importance, whereas death merely serves as a reminder to claim the vital existence. Only when one's life is consumed with agony and becomes too painful to continue would the Satanist commit suicide. Most organizations with eyes toward the future would be ill-served by convincing its members to kill themselves.
Anton LaVey Never Claimed to be the Devil
It's important to separate LaVey from other cult figures in this respect. Although he had the look of a devil, the Doktor never claimed to be any sort of incarnation of Satan, nor did he claim to have ever summoned Satan, or have communicated with a Devil in any form. LaVey's magic came from the force of his will, and his religion was born from his own wisdom, not endowed by any supernatural being.
No Prayer in Satanism
"Satanism demands study, not worship!"
Satanists are realists, and understand that if you want something to happen, you need to take action in order to make it happen. Prayer is wasting time that would be better spent being productive in achieving your goals. Anyone praying to a physical Satan would be laughable to the LaVeyan Satanist. Satanic rituals are instead a means of elevating the self, exhuming energies & directing them towards specific objectives. We advance by taking action, not by falling to our knees & tearfully whimpering to an intangible higher power. Satanism has no place for this kind of weakness.
